80th anniversary inspires more people to connect

Battlefield tours can take on many different forms, depending on who the audience is. For our tour guests, they serve as a bridge between the past and the present. They allow people to honour the sacrifices of those who came before. They also allow to meet with the people who were most affected by the war.

Visits to former battle areas provide visitors with a deeper understanding of historical events that shaped the world. At the same time, those visits make it possible to provide context to more individual experiences which are not always obvious from the black-and-white photographs brought back home by the veterans.

As the anniversary of the key battles the Nisei fought in approaches, the significance of tours becomes even more apparent. The number of enquiries to join tours next year bears testimony to the ongoing interest.

Battlefield tours: honouring the past, understanding the present

The tours do provide a very tangible connection to history. Standing in places where pivotal events unfolded offers a visceral experience that transcends the pages of a book. The 80th anniversary commemorations amplify this experience even more. Whether it’s the banks of the Volturno river, the exposed position of Hill 140, the tree-covered slopes of the Vosges mountains, or the infamous steep ridges of the Gothic Line, each location holds a unique story. Each one is waiting to be told.

Honouring the past on battlefield tours is not merely an act of remembrance though. Yes, with their guided narratives they are a medium through which the heroism and struggles of the past are kept alive.

However, these tours also offer a platform for understanding the present. The lessons learned from historical battles echo through time. They provide insights into the complexities of human conflict, something we see far too much of recently.

The 80th anniversary of WW2 prompts a reassessment of the relevance of these lessons in today’s world. How have the values of courage, resilience, and sacrifice evolved? Connecting with people who had different experiences of that war can facilitate these reflections, fostering a dialogue between history and contemporary issues.

As tour members walk through the now peaceful landscapes, they not only pay homage to the fallen in battle. Through contact with local people, they also gain a more nuanced perspective on the complexities of war as it touched those off the battlefields just as much.

Any time is a good time…

The 80th anniversary does inspire many of you to make a trip to the battlefields of Italy and France, but it certainly isn’t the only moment that’s appropriate for a visit to the towns and people liberated by the men of the 100th/442nd. We will continue with providing opportunity to make those trips over the coming years.

For now though, we have plenty of work to do on getting the 80th anniversary battlefield tours for 2024 ready!
